Do You Let Your Ego Keep You Small?

Years ago, when I was studying my first massage qualification my massage tutor said something to me that I didn't really understand at the time.
It was the day of my practical assessment. Having achieved 98% in my anatomy & physiology exam, I was feeling confident. Then the assessor walked in and said to my massage tutor, "There aren't going to be any Distinctions here today". I thought, I'll show you! And I gave the best damn massage I could.
True to her word, the assessor didn't award anyone in my class a Distinction. I got a Merit. I was outraged! I told my tutor how pissed off I was and how much I wanted a Distinction. My tutor responded with, "That's just your ego talking".
What did she mean it's my ego talking?
I didn't get it. Not at all. I don't have a big ego! I'm not conceited! Or big headed! Or vain! It wasn't until a few years later that I finally got what she meant. She wasn't talking about ego in the common understanding of the word. She was talking about Ego in the spiritual sense of the word.
Although Ego can mean being conceited and all that stuff. It's so much more than that. You Ego is the sum of all of your beliefs about yourself. All the beliefs you've picked up along the way; mostly beliefs you've had dumped on you by others that you duly adopt as your own.
These beliefs tell you who you are and aren't, what you are and are not capable of, what you can and can't achieve...basically they keep you in the box of what you have come to believe about yourself, what feels safe for you.
And Ego does NOT like change. It does not like you getting ideas above your station. So when you start awakening to the fact that you are limitless and powerful and able to be, do and have anything you want, Ego throws a proper strop. Shit gets real!
Ego will throw everything at you to keep you in that box and stop your inner self from gently leading you towards your purpose. Did you ever have a brilliant idea to do something different, make some sort of change? And then just as you get the confidence to follow that path, life gets in the way in a BIG way? You get ill, have an accident, lose your job, relationship breaks down, you spill your coffee all over you on the way to an interview, someone close to you has a crisis and needs you.......
Sound familiar?
Well that was no coincidence Honey. It wasn't bad luck or bad timing. It was your Ego trying to put the brakes on. So next time all Hell breaks loose in your life, ask yourself what you were on the brink of, tell Ego to do one (it does NOT get to decide who and what you are - YOU DO) and push on through. I promise you that once Ego gets the message that you're not messing around, the Universe will reward you in the most magnificent way.
Good things will flow to you with ease, events will synchronise and line up for your greatest good and life will be sweet!
Part of living your life on purpose, creating your life on purpose, is being conscious of when Ego starts stirring things up. Kind of like the devil on your shoulder, with Soul being the angel on the other shoulder. I know which shoulder I choose to lead with.
